There's a quiet intelligence in yin yoga that reveals itself slowly.
Not through effort or intensity... but through patience, sensation, and the willingness to stay.
If you've ever been curious about what's really happening beneath the surface of a yin practice… this is where it begins.
Yin yoga has three simple principles. They take about ten seconds to understand - and a lifetime to practice. Sound familiar?
🩷 Play your edge. Not too deep, not too shallow. You're looking for that place where there's just enough sensation to be interesting, without tipping into strain or pain. On the mat, this is how we work with the body intelligently - listening rather than forcing. Off the mat? This is the practice of knowing yourself well enough to meet life's challenges without collapsing under them or bracing so hard you can't feel anything at all.
🩷 Resolve to remain still. Here's the thing nobody tells you before their first yin class: being still can be hard. The body settles, and suddenly the mind has nowhere to hide. Restlessness, self-criticism, that thing you said in 2014 - it all surfaces. But this is precisely the point. Physical stillness creates the conditions for mental stillness. We learn to be with what's here without immediately fleeing it. That capacity - to stay with discomfort without being consumed by it - is one of the most useful skills you'll ever develop, on or off the mat.
🩷 Hold for time. Three to five minutes. Long enough for the fascia to soften, the nervous system to settle, and something in you to genuinely let go. The magic doesn't happen in the first thirty seconds. It happens when you stay. When you breathe through the resistance and discover you're still okay. This is where the real practice lives - and where you start to trust yourself under pressure.
Together, these three principles do something remarkable: they teach our nervous system that it's safe to be present. That we can feel difficult things and survive them. That stillness isn't something to fear - it's somewhere to come home to.
Ready to learn the method properly?
Our Yin Yoga Teacher Training with Bryony is coming up - and Early Bird pricing is still available for 'just' a little longer.
